National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan


The National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan is based on the private collection of Andrei Fedorovich Likhachev (1832-90), well-known archaeologist, historian, collector, as well as exhibits of the 1890 scientific and industrial exhibition. On the three floors of the museum there are scientific, literary and musical exhibits directly related to the history and development of Tatarstan. Here you can see the carriage of Catherine II, on which she drove around the city during her visit to Kazan, the corner of the Tatar philosopher Shigabutdin Mardjani.

The «Hermitage-Kazan» Exhibition Center


The «Hermitage-Kazan» Center is a branch of the State Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg). There are exhibited works of painting, graphics and arts and crafts, historical and cultural collections. At theme exhibitions to replace each other every six months, one can see exhibits fr om the collection of one of the largest museums in the world, without leaving Kazan.

The State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan

One of the largest art collections in Russia was created in 1958 on the basis of the picture gallery of the State Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan. The exposition of the museum includes about 25 thousand paintings, graphics, sculptures, arts and crafts. The museum is located in the beautiful mansion of the beginning of the XX century - the former residence commander of the Kazan military district of General Sandetsky. The mansion, built in 1906 by the architect Amlong, impresses both in appearance and interior decoration.

Museum of Soviet Life

The Museum of Soviet Life is a unique place where everyone travels to the still distant but forgotten 70s-80s of the 20th century. Kazan Circus

The Kazan circus is a "flying saucer", the cosmic silhouette of which has become an integral part of modern urban development, a kind of exotic attribute straight in front of the ancient Kremlin hill.

Tatar State Opera & Ballet Theatre named after Musa Jalil


The date theater opening is 1938. At the beginning of its history, the theater accepted only opera performances on the stage. Since 1941 it has been transformed into a theater of opera and ballet, and since 1956 it was named after the famous Tatar poet Musa Jalil. The theater played an important role in the formation of the national performing school and the development of musical and scenic genres of Tatar music. About 40 operas, ballets and musical comedies of Tatar composers were performed on his stage. The repertoire of the theater includes classical works of domestic and foreign composers.

Tatar State Puppet Theatre «Ekiyat»

The Tatar State Puppet Theater "Ekiyat" was founded in 1934 and is one of the leading puppet theaters of the Russian Federation. The repertoire of the theater comprises more than 40 puppet plays based on the tales of the world’s various nations including historical and contemporary puppet shows. Dolls of various styles and forms (fr om classic to modern style) are used in the puppet plays. Since 1974 the theater has become a member of the International Organization of Puppet Theaters - UNIMA.

Kazan Academic Russian Drama Theatre named after V.I. Kachalov

The theatre is one of the oldest playhouses in Kazan. In 1948 the theater was named after the People's Artist of the USSR Vasily Ivanovich Kachalov who actually began his creative career in this place. The ceremonial unveiling of a monument to Vasily Ivanovich Kachalov in the foyer-atrium of the theater took place in 2005.

Kazan State Theater for the Young

The first performance in Kazan State Theater for the Young Audiences called "Rovesniki" (Peers) was held on November 30, 1932. This day is considered to be the Theater’s birthday. A wealth of experience has been gained by the theatre over the years; a lot of talented actors took on the roles in prominent plays represented by well-known stage directors under its curtains. The theater was always famous for its highprofile stage directing.

Creative Development Studio of Konstantin Khabensky

The Studio organized by Konstantin Khabensky in Kazan was granted the citywide status in 2013. Nowadays the Studio involves 350 students from 2 to 11 classes as well as popular Kazan actors, directors and Kazan Theater School teachers. The students are thoroughly pre-qualified to pass the creative selection. Visiting various theatres and exhibitions, participating in master classes and creative laboratories, compiling photo albums, making video-rollers are the necessary components of the studio's life wh ere the cooperation with children’s parents is the circumstance of no small importance. Kazan Studio for Creative Development is a permanent participant in various cultural events held in the capital of Tatarstan. So, the Studio took part in "AksenovFest" festival, the city project "Literary Yard", the mobile theater "Fairy Tales in the City", the marathon "The Children of Tatarstan in the Great Land of Bulgars" and many others.

 Kazan Сhamber Theatre “SDVIG”

The little theatre has covered a long way of its development from the Students’ Theatre of Variety Miniatures (STEM) on out to Kazan Сhamber Theatre. Between 1994 and 2008 the theatre cast successfully appeared on the stage of various student festivals. In 2009 the little theatre made his debut with the military drama "Privates". The play has become the first step on the way to creating a professional theater. Seven plays of different genres were successfully staged between 2009 and 2014 at various venues of the city. In 2014 the theater staff organized the summer festival of street performance "Cultural shift" which has become a good tradition: ever since the festival takes place every year in the streets of Kazan. At present the theater’s repertoire comprises the plays of different genres, various styles and levels of understanding. The theatre’s creative team strives to thoroughly scrutinize the concept of "Human value" in each new play and project striving to prove it by the style of life. It was the artistic conception of human value that provided the basis for the general idea of ​​the theater.

Kazan is a city where two religions are historically closely intertwined: Sunni Islam and Orthodox Christianity. There are more than 40 mosques and almost 30 orthodox churches. Besides there are also Catholic and Lutheran parishes, a synagogue, etc.

The Kul Sharif Mosque

Since 2005 Kul Sharif is the main mosque of Kazan and the Republic of Tatarstan. It is located on the territory of the Kazan Kremlin. The opening of the mosque was held on June 24, 2005, towards the 1000th anniversary of Kazan. Kul Sharif is located in a western part of the Kazan Kremlin. The capacity of the mosque is to fifteen hundred people and another ten thousand people can be accommodated in the square in front of the mosque. The height of each of the four main minarets is 58 meters. There are two viewing balconies for tourists inside of the mosque. The complex of the mosque includes the building itself, a museum of the history of the spread of Islam in the Middle Volga region, a room for the solemn wedding ceremony, imam room. The building and the vicinity have a spectacular night architectural illumination. Located in the main hall there are books consisting of the names of all those who donated for the construction of the mosques. In this room there are also gift editions of the Koran in different languages of the world.

The Al-Mardjani Mosque

This is the mosque in the Old Tatar Settlement of the Kazan City. It is located between Nasyri street and the shore of Lake Nizhny (Near) Boar. The mosque was the historical and iconic embodiment of the start of society multi-confessional tolerance in Russia, proclaimed by Empress Catherine II at the end of the XVIII century. It was also the largest mosque in Kazan for more than two centuries and nowadays remains as the historical center of the Muslim spirituality in Tatarstan. The building is designed in the traditions of the Tatar medieval architecture of mosques with a minaret on the roof comprising the provincial baroque style form. The two-storey mosque has a three-tiered minaret. The facade and interior design was retained in a combination of the "Petersburg" baroque architecture and the ornamental motifs of the Tatar decorative art.

Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral

Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral, of course, is the most valuable architectural monument and one of the spiritual symbols of Kazan. Built on an elevated place, beautiful and majestic, the cathedral has a unique decoration. The composition of the church and bell tower is made in the style of the so-called Russian or "Naryshkinsky" baroque, which is widespread in Russia in the late XVII - first half of the XVIII century. The unique appearance of the cathedral is famous by the bright colors and an abundance of facade details which is preserved to our times. At present, the Peter and Paul Cathedral, having the status of a cathedral church, is certainly one of the centers of the Kazan spiritual life. Regular church services and diocesan celebrations are held here.

The Annunciation Cathedral of the Kazan Kremlin

The Annunciation Cathedral of the Kazan Kremlin is a witness and a preserver of history of the Kremlin and Kazan. The main cathedral of the Kazan , which prerevolutionary was the cathedral of the Kazan diocese, was founded on October 4, 1552 by the order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The Annunciation Cathedral is daily open for faithful and celebrations are held in the church on holidays.

The Kazan-Vyatka Diocese 

The canonical and territorial-administrative subdivision of the Russian Orthodox Old Believer Church on the territory of Tatarstan, Udmurtia, Mari El, Chuvashia, Mordovia, Kirov and Ulyanovsk regions. The cathedral city is Kazan. The cathedral church –is the church of the Kazan icon of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Ioanno-Predtechensky Monastery

The monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church, located opposite to the Spassky Tower of the Kazan Kremlin. Until 1917 church was named after the Ivanovskaya Monastery (now May 1 Square). Symmetrical with respect to the descent from the square, the 47-meter tent of the Spassky Tower and the three-meter 45-meter-high Ioanno-Predtechensky Cathedral of the monastery (destroyed in the 1930s) constituted a unique architectural ensemble.


The Holy Assumption Monastery on the Zilant Mountain

The oldest surviving monastery of the Volga region, founded by Ivan the Terrible on the day and year of the capture of Kazan on October 15, 1552 for the eternal commemoration of the fallen soldiers. The history of the monastery is rich in events of national importance, connected with the name of Tsar Ivan the Terrible, rulers and many noble families of the city of Kazan. It is located in the Kirov district of the Kazan City, far from the city noise. Its golden domes are visible from everywhere. It existed until 1918. During the Soviet period, the monastery housed a children's colony, warehouses of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and communal services. Since 1998, it began to revive as a nunnery. The monastery in terms of the composition of the monks has always been small, and is also scarce at the present time. The monastery is dormitory, with the daily committing of a full daily circle of services. Sisters are obedient in monastic temples, at a meal, in the territory. Monastic sisters are engaged in various needlework, restoration of icons, conducting excursions to the monastery with groups of pilgrims.

The Temple of All Religions, also the Universal Temple, the International Cultural Center of Spiritual Unity

An architectural complex in the village of Staroye Arakchino, which is part of the city of Kazan. Construction was started in 1994 by the artist, architect, sculptor, healer and public figure Ildar Khanov. According to the author and the owner of the complex, it was built as an architectural symbol of religions, cultures and civilizations. Services and rituals are not held in the complex. The ensemble adjoins an Orthodox Church, Moslem mosque, Jewish synagogue, and pagoda. In total, the project includes domes and other iconic elements of 16 religions, including religious cults of former civilizations. A concert hall, in which musical and poetic evenings are held, is open on Sundays. On ordinary days, visitors are not allowed in.

The Orthodox Monastery of Kazan, the place of the Mother-of –God of Kazan. It is located within walking distance from the Kazan Kremlin, east of the Kremlin Hill, on Bolshaya Krasnaya Street.

Kazan appeared to be the 101st city in the world being serviced by the international company City Sightseeing Worldwide. Its double decker buses are equipped with a special folding roof opened in warm season. A 55 passenger bus with is a retractable ramp for disabled people operates in an hour loop covering the historical part of the city: Staro-Tatarskaya Sloboda district, the Kremlin of Kazan, the Kazanka river embankment, Ploschad Svobody, Baumana Street and other.

The bus makes 10 stops on its route and you are able to join the tour on any of them. You can also get off at any of 10 stops to be acquainted with the place of your interest in more detail and, having saved the ticket, take the next double-decker. The ticket is valid 24 hours after the first boarding and the interval of bus traffic makes about 30 minutes. The audio guide speaks eight languages.

The first bus in the summer season starts at 10:30 and the last one finishes moving along the route at 19:50.
The first bus in the winter season starts at 10:30 and the last one finishes moving at 17:20.

Tickets can be purchased at city hotels, tourist centers and in the bus itself when boarding.
The ticket price: adults -500 rubles, children and pensioners - 400 rubles. Children under 5 years old, veterans of the Second World War, disabled people of I and II category can use the services free of charge. Double-deckers start fr om Tukay Square.

3. Night Kazan.

A beautiful and mysterious lake Kaban lies in the centre of Kazan. The lake is areally the largest in Tatarstan and is geographically divided into three parts: The Lower, Middle and Upper Kaban. The local dwellers and the guests of the capital enjoy feeding ducks floating in the lake and the view of the large fountain ejecting the violent streams of water up to 50 meters high. And those who are interested in the history of this mystic lake can make a tour - cruise wh ere they will get to know the main secret of the lake: the Khan’s teeming treasures hidden beneath the waves.
