Flamingos have settled in the Kazan zoo – they are fed with sliced vegetables, chopped meat and fish

Now the birds have a gray-white color – the color of their feathers depends on nutrition and age.

Pink flamingos have settled in the Zambezi River Zoo in Kazan. The long-awaited birds came to us in June from Amman (Jordan). They were quarantined for thirty days and are ready to meet with zoo visitors.

Twenty flamingos were brought to Kazan – all of them were born in 2017. Due to the young age of the birds, it is impossible to determine their sex, as long as they are all of the same height and weight. Therefore, the names have not yet been given. “It will become clear when they reach close to sexual maturity. Those that are taller are males, those that are smaller are females. Now they are gray-white, almost without a pink color, because they have a teenage feather. The plumage of flamingos changes with age, a little later they will turn pink”, - said Evgenia Artamonova, a zoo engineer.

Flamingos are fed with special compound feed. In addition, their meals included sliced vegetables, chopped fish and meat.

Their living conditions are carefully considered. In addition to a pool, fences and electric fences are installed in the aviary so that birds do not fly over and accidentally get to other birds and animals. In addition to the outdoor aviary, flamingos have an internal one, in which they spend time at night and will live in winter.

According to experts, now the flamingos are already quite relaxed and are beginning to get used to the new place.

The visitors of the Zambezi River Zoo have already been acquainted with the new birds. According to the zoo staff, there are very popular among the visitors.

Other new animals will arrive to the zoo closer to autumn, E.Artamonova said.
