The new building is planned to be built on Khadi Taktasha Street, next to the embankment of Kaban Lake.
An international competition for the development of an architectural concept for a new building of the Tatar State Academic Theater named after G. Kamal launches in Kazan. Today, the Mayor of the city Ilsur Metshin noted at a press conference that the relocation of the theater will be a historical occasion for the capital of the republic.
An important decision for the theater team and the cultural life of the whole republic was made by Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov. The total area of the new building will be more than 20,000 sq.m. It is planned to build it near the intersection of Nursultan Nazarbayev and Khadi Taktasha streets, next to the embankment of Kaban Lake.
Aide to Tatarstan President Natalia Fishman-Bekmambetova said that the theater building will be located in the park, while parking and utilities will be located underground.
The present building of the theater was built for its 90th anniversary. Due to the lack of space, the theater's employees are now in very cramped conditions.
It is impossible to expand the building in the present territory, so it was decided to build a new building. Irada Ayupova, Minister of Culture of Tatarstan noted, it is important to make the theater modern, but to preserve its idea and atmosphere.
Speaking about the present building of the theater, the Mayor of the city Ilsur Metshin noted that its fate will be determined by the residents of the city, a collection of ideas will be organized.
The competition will be organized according to UNESCO standards, and when considering projects, the jury members will not know who the author of the works is. Both Russian and foreign architects can take part in the competition, and, if desired, can unite in consortia.
Applications are accepted until September 15, 2021. The winner will be announced on January 27, 2022, following the results of the meeting of the international jury.
