Participants of the “Tom Sawyer Fest” updated five houses in the center of Kazan last summer

<p> (KZN.RU, September 5). Last summer, the participants of the “Tom Sawyer Fest” updated five houses in the center of Kazan, work in another one is postponed for the next year. The closing of the festival will be held on September 8 at noon in the yard of the house №12 on Dostoevsky Street. </p> <p> </p> <p> Starting on June 2, volunteers, including students, journalists, writers, construction masters, and blacksmiths, have updated five houses. Thus, fence and facade were restored on Volkov Street, №14, the territory was cleaned and the gates were installed. The house №12 on Dostoyevsky Street was repainted, there are an updated annex now. The house №4 on Kalinina street now has a new forged canopy and facade; downpipes and some other communications have been replaced there. This year, for the first time the festival participants started repairing the house in Staro-Tatarskaya Sloboda. The facade of the building №33 on Tukay Street was painted in its original color, the gates identical to the historical ones were installed. Also, the facade was renewed at the house №14 on S. Sadykova Street </p> <p> </p> <p> The building on F. Karim, №11, known as the Berkutov's house, will be the object of the festival next year. Now the project is being developed, pillars are being produced, and solutions for restoring the attic are being sought. In the process of preparation, the volunteers found an original vase in the attic, and now the possibility of its restoration is being considered, said the organizers. </p> <p> </p> <p> Kazan joined the project to restore the appearance of historic houses in 2016. The concept of the “Tom Sawyer Festa”, which started in 2015 in Samara, is that the concerned citizens with their own efforts, with the support of patrons and free of charge for the tenants, put in order the appearance of the wooden houses in the historic center of the city. Expert assistance to Kazan activists is provided by the Department of Restoration and Reconstruction of the KSUAE and the Union of Restorers of the RT, and the Coordinator is the Tatarstan Regional Branch of the All-Russian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments. </p>
