(KZN.RU, April 26, Alena Miroshnichenko). Today, the final city stage of the V anniversary badminton tournament for the Kazan Mayor’ Cup has started in Kazan. There are 192 players in 8 teams on the grounds of the Badminton Center today.
The tournament has been held within the framework of the Olympics of students of Kazan educational institutions since 2015. It covers all age categories of schoolchildren and involves competition in three groups: -4 grades, 5-8 grades, and 9-11 grades. To compete for the coveted cup, the children go through the school stage first, then the district stage, and the winners go on a city tour. In total, this year the tournament has gathered 4929 schoolchildren, that is 200 more than last year.
Yuri Chaplygin, the President of the Badminton Federation of the RT, notes that the tournament is of great importance for the development of this sport both in the city and in the republic. “All schools of the city are involved, all districts, the number of people involved in badminton is growing. Today their number in the republic is 15 thousand people”, he said. The availability of this sport allows both to strengthen their physical condition at the amateur level and to develop their skills in order to build a professional career. The current tournament serves as a springboard for this. This year its prize fund is 150 thousand rubles.
