Mayor of Kazan: “The educational facilities are 95% ready for the new school year”

In five years, 16 educational facilities for 16,500 students have been built in the capital of Tatarstan

Two weeks prior to the school year, the readiness of Kazan's educational facilities is 95% - Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin informed today in his speech at the annual August meeting of education and science workers of the republic of Tatarstan, which takes place in the IT Park. Repairs are being completed at 17 schools and 7 kindergartens. In 10 years, 106 schools and 88 kindergartens have been overhauled.

According to Ilsur Metshin, despite the decline in the birth rate, which is typical for the country today, Kazan remains in the leaders among the cities with population over million people in this indicator. As a result, today 40% of schools work in two shifts.

However, Kazan continues to lead in terms of the pace and volume of construction and renovation of schools and kindergartens. Over the past 5 years, 16 schools and additional buildings have been built for 16,500 students and 32 kindergartens.

“This year we are opening a record number of facilities, two kindergartens for 440 children and four schools that are equipped with swimming pools, gyms, and spacious libraries. Each with its own “face” and concept,”- the Mayor said.

An outdoor sports and recreation complex is equipped at school № 49, which has become a venue for children of nearby residential areas. Also, the construction of a sports hall is underway at the school.

An additional building for 280 students is being built at school № 19 (48 Pobedy Avenue) under the Education national project. A sports hall, classrooms and a food hall will be located in the building.

Systematic work is underway to renovate educational institutions. 106 schools and 88 kindergartens have been overhauled in 10 years. This year, repair work is being completed at 17 schools and 7 kindergartens.

According to the Mayor, the buildings of 136 schools and 183 kindergartens need a comprehensive overhaul with landscaping. 90% of them are buildings built more than 30 years ago.

In the new school year, a record number of schoolchildren – 174 thousand - will go to schools in Kazan. Over the past 5 years, the number of students has increased by 33 thousand.
