In autumn, the second cell of the Vostochny solid waste landfill for 1.6 million tons of waste will open in Kazan
Since 2005, the amount of waste produced in Kazan has tripled– from 550 tons to 1,500-1,800 tons per day. This calls for construction a new cell of the Vostochny solid waste landfill, which will soon be opened, in three years it will be able to accept 1.6 million tons of waste. The Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin headed a meeting with the management of the regional operator at the Vostochny landfill. The head of the city inspected the progress of work and compliance with environmental safety requirements at the landfill, where waterproofing material is laid to protect the soil and a degassing system is provided.
In Kazan, the PZhKH regional operator will complete the construction of the second cell of the Vostochny solid municipal waste landfill in autumn. It will be able to accept 1.6 million tons of waste. According to preliminary calculations, with the daily formation of 1,500-1,800 tons of waste, the new cell will operate for three years. This was reported to Ilsur Metshin by Yevgeny Chekashov, Director General of the PZhKH regional operator, during a meeting at the landfill.
A protective shield is installed at the bottom of the pit, which prevents waste from entering the soil. It consists of several layers: this is a special waterproofing material made of geomembrane and geotextile, sand and crushed stone, which guarantees 100% protection of soil and groundwater. A filter system has been provided for cleaning landfill gases. Treatment facilities will be built to neutralize the so-called "filtrate at the storage pond.
In addition, the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Environmental Protection conducts a mandatory ornithological study and, according to Yevgeny Chekashov, experts were pleasantly surprised that some red-book birds settle nearby. This suggests that during the construction of the first cell, all the necessary environmental requirements were also met.
“All the environmental safety requirements must be observed. So that environment is protected for decades to come,”- Ilsur Metshin said.
The second cell of the Vostochny solid waste landfill will replace the landfill on Khimicheskaya Street, which is already almost full and will stop accepting garbage by the end of the year.
Ilsur Metshin drew attention to the fact that waste production in Kazan has tripled since 2005. In 2005 landfills received about 550 tons of garbage per day, while in 2010 it was already about 1,000 tons. Today, 1,500– 1,800 tons of waste are produced in Kazan per day. The increase is explained by the increase in the number of citizens and by the change in the morphology of garbage.
The growth of waste production, in turn, forces to reconsider plans for the construction of solid waste landfills. According to preliminary design, the landfill opened in 2010 on Khimicheskaya Street should have been used for 28 years. However, now the landfill is almost full and will stop accepting garbage after the commissioning of the second cell of the Vostochny landfill. Thus, the landfill on Khimicheskaya Street served for 13 years. At the current rate of waste production in Kazan, another new solid waste landfill will be needed very soon. According to the plan approved by the Ministry of Construction of the republic of Tatarstan in 2019, it is planned to create intermunicipal landfills outside the capital of the republic.
