The “Tom Sawyer Fest” starts in Kazan on June 1

During the summer season, activists plan to renew 3 houses in the historic center of the city.

(KZN.RU, May 30). From June 1, Kazan will join the All-Russian Festival “Tom Sawyer Fest”. Activists plan to renew 3 houses in the historic center of the city.

The festival will begin at 2 pm at the house №12 in Kalinin Street. Coordinators will tell guests about the history of the festival and plans for this season.

Over the summer, Kazan volunteers plan to restore the facade of the Bogorodsky house, located at Volkov Street, №42. It is an object of the cultural heritage of republican significance, an architectural monument in the style of eclecticism with modern elements. In 1910-1943, the chemist Alexey Bogorodsky lived in the house. Now the descendants of the professor live in it.

Also, activists will update Berkutov house on Fatikh Karim Street, №11. This is an object of the cultural heritage of municipal importance. A sample of wooden urban architecture, the decorative design of which combines the motifs of Tatar folk architecture and modern elements. It was built at the end of the XIX century. N. Berkutov, a doctor of the fifth Kazan police station, lived there, as now his descendants do.

The third “participant” of the festival will be the house №12 on Kalinin Street. It is an interesting example of wooden architecture and represents the historical environmental construction of the city.

The involvement of volunteers in the restoration of monuments was made possible thanks to amendments to federal legislation adopted last year. The innovations turned out to be particularly relevant for the movement to restore the historic appearance of the “Tom Sawyer Fest” houses, which already covered more than 30 cities across the country.

Kazan joined the project to restore the appearance of historic houses in 2016. The concept of “Tom Sawyer Fest”, originated in 2015 in Samara, is that citizens with by their own forces, with the support of philanthropists and free for residents, clean up the appearance of wooden houses in the historic center of the city.

Last year, activists renewed 5 out of the 8 planned houses located at the following addresses: Volkov Street, №14, S. Sadykova Street, №14, G. Tukay Street, №33, Dostoevsky Street, №12, and Kalinina Street, №4.
