The work is being done in preparation for the BRICS Summit
For the first time in the capital of Tatarstan, the lifting platforms in six above-ground pedestrian crossings are being replaced with fully functional elevators with heated shafts, similar to those in apartment buildings. They offer several advantages, including a longer service life and more comfortable use. The replacement of the emergency elevators that were installed in 2011 for the Universiade is scheduled to be completed by October. The Mayor Ilsur Metshin inspected the work at the intersection of Pavlyukhina and Khaleva Streets.
Work on the replacement of elevators began in March 2024. Currently, new elevator platforms are operating at the Orenburgsky Tract, the Veterinary Academy bus stop, the intersection of Pavlyukhina and Khaleva Streets, as well as on Chistopolskaya and F. Amirkhana Streets. An elevator shaft is currently being installed at the adjacent building on F. Amirkhana Street and commissioning work is underway on Akademika Sakharova Street. A total of 366 million rubles have been allocated from the republican budget for the replacement.
“Every major international and local event and that the country holds in Kazan allows to improve infrastructure facilities. On the eve of the Universiade, a pedestrian crossing was built, including on Pavlyukhina Street, but in the absence of the necessary funds, an elevator for the disabled people was made, let's say, with the limit of money available at that time. Thanks to the preparations for the BRICS summit, we have completely updated it,”- said Mayor Ilsur Metshin.
He added that there are 57 lifting platforms in total in Kazan – they are now functioning, but they will also need to be replaced at the end of their service life. “Thanks to the BRICS, the federal leadership for the programs thanks to which we are updating the urban infrastructure,”- the Mayor said.
According to Igor Kulyazhev, Deputy Head of the Executive Committee, the new elevators are equipped with anti-vandal structures and warm shafts, similar to those found in apartment buildings. This allows users to use the elevators at any time of year and protects the equipment from weather conditions. The cabins have lighting and music. The controls are positioned so that people in wheelchairs can easily use them. The load capacity is 800 kilograms, and the lifespan is 25 years.
During the work at the intersection of Pavlyukhina and Khaleva Streets, all lifting equipment was dismantled, the piles were concreted, the foundation slabs were filled, and the elevators were installed. Work was performed with the mines and their entrance groups. Specialists installed video surveillance cameras, provided users with access to the control room, and connected a photo-reversing system that prevents doors from closing if there is a foreign object in the doorway.
The BRICS Summit will take place in Kazan on October 22 - 24. The venue of the event was determined after Russia assumed the BRICS presidency on January 1, which will last until the end of the year.
About 20 thousand participants are expected to attend the summit. In addition to delegations with heads of state, media and technical staff, law enforcement officers, and volunteers will arrive in the city.
Currently, active preparations are underway in Kazan: the repair of facades of 38 apartment buildings and accommodation facilities is being completed; 5.5 km of utility networks have been replaced; 23 sections of streets out of 29 planned have been updated.
