It began at the stadium “Trudovye Reservy” with an opening match between the teams of schools №39 of the Vakhitovsky district and №62 of the Aviastroitelny district of the older age category. </p> <p> </p> <p> Evgeny Varakin, the head of the Office of the Kazan Executive Committee, Alexander Gusev, the chairman of the Football Federation of the RT, Rustem Saimanov, the general director of the Football Club “Rubin”, Ruslan Minabutdinov, the director of the stadium “Trudovye Reservy”, and others open the tournament. </p> <p> </p> <p> “More than 10 thousand boys and girls in the republic play football, participate in championships of our republic. But the most massive, most affordable, most beautiful is the tournament “Leather Ball”, in which you participate. I wish you respect your opponents, but not forget to score goals”, said Alexander Gusev. </p> <p> </p> <p> Evgeny Varakin also wished the young athletes good luck and victory. “I believe that we will see an uncompromising struggle in this final, where each of you will prove that you are worth to be on this field. But the most important thing in this contest is the friendship between schools that you will receive. I note that many football stars went through this tournament, so I am confident that you have a great future”, he said. Afterward, together with Alexander Gusev, he made a traditional symbolic serve to the gate defended by Kamil Idrisov, a player of the team of the school №39 of the Vakhitovsky district. </p> <p> </p> <p> In total, the city stage of the tournament gathered 430 young athletes from 24 teams. They are divided into three age categories: 2004-2005, 2006-2007, 2008-2009 year of birth. Teams for participation in the tournament “Leather Ball” in Kazan are formed on the basis of secondary schools. All games are held in modern municipal stadiums of the city, including “Tasma”, “Raketa”, “Kozhany Myatch”, “Trudovye Reservy”, the Central Stadium, and others. The final match of this year's competition will be held on May 31 at the stadium “Basko”. Here the winners will be determined, who will represent the city at the republican stage, and the champions in the older age category will receive the Cup “Leather Ball”. </p> <p> </p> The All-Russian tournament “Leather Ball” is youth football competitions. The first tournament was held at the initiative of the legendary Soviet goalkeeper Lev Yashin in 1964, but it was held only in one age group. Today, competitions are held in three age groups and are the most popular football competitions on the territory of Russia.
