The liquid chemicals can be used at temperatures up to -10 degrees and during light snowfall
Testing of deicing chemicals for roads with the use of a liquid agent has begun in Kazan. The new technology provides the most effective surface coverage and reduces environmental impacts.
Combined road treatment is currently being used in Kazan to combat the icy conditions. Depending on the weather conditions, a gritting salt or two–phase (wetted) reagent is used on the roads, and in some areas the sand –and-salt mixture it is still used.
The conventional gritting salt remains indispensable in conditions of extreme cold, as it retains its effectiveness at temperatures up to -35 C. However, its main disadvantage is its high volatility: a significant part of the granules is swept away from the roadway by wind or air currents from passing cars. A more modern two-phase reagent, which is a mixture of solid particles and a wetting solution, operates at temperatures up to -20 C. It stays on the road, providing fast melting of ice, however remains quite expensive to manufacture and use.
The new liquid chemicals allows using during moderate winter weather conditions. In Kazan, about half of all winter days have average temperature from 0 to -7 degrees and light precipitation. It is during this period that the use of liquid composition is effective. Unlike gritting salt, the liquid provides one hundred percent coverage of the treated surface, which eliminates product loss. At the same time, the cost of the liquid phase is 2-2.5 times lower than the gritting salt and its impact on the environment and road infrastructure less harmful.
