The number of fires decreased in Kazan

Compared to 2019, the number of fires decreased by almost 13%.

In 2020, 1,134 fires were registered in Kazan, which is 12.97% less than in 2019. Ferdinant Timurkhanov, the head of the Department of civil protection, announced this today at the Business Monday at the Executive Committee of Kazan.

In 2020, 25 people died in fires, 50 people were injured, and 91 people were rescued. One of the most effective means of preventing the death of people in fires is the installation of an autonomous fire detector, said Ferdinant Timurkhanov. The detector responds to fires immediately and is able to alarm in a timely manner to warn of a fire. As of today, under the republican program, 879 detectors have been installed in 293 apartments of large families, families in a socially dangerous situation, elderly citizens over 70 years old living alone and disabled people.

Preventive efforts among the citizens also help to reduce the number of fires, Timurkhanov noted. During the special fire protection periods from April 25 to May 10 and in August, preventive groups were held to conduct meetings with residents of residential areas and distribute fire safety information. More than 11 thousand leaflets were distributed.

The head of the Civil Protection Department also noted a number of problematic issues. One obstacle in the fire suppression is the impossibility of driving fire equipment to the location because of the parked cars in the yards. Following the example of Moscow, in Kazan, the so-called “Red area” appeared in some yards, suggesting the organization of special areas for fire service vehicles at the multi-story apartment buildings. In accordance with the traffic rules, a “No standing” sign is installed on a specific section of the yard, and red and white markings are applied on the asphalt for visualization.

Rustem Gafarov, head of the Executive Committee of Kazan, emphasized that thanks to the coordinated and professional work of rescuers, hundreds of people were saved. “There is a lot of routine work in the activities of the department – training, developing skills, working with the population, but this part of the work should not be neglected”, - Rustem Gafarov said. He also added due attention should be paid for safety in schools and enterprises of the city. “The work on equipping security systems and video surveillance of urban facilities also contributes to the monitoring and rapid response to the fires and other accidents. This work is expensive, but we will continue it”, - Rustem Gafarov said.
