In February, Kazan Vodokanal will launch a large-scale reconstruction of the sewer collector

The Mayor of the city Ilsur Metshin inspected the progress of preparatory work.

In February, the Municipal Unitary Enterprise “Vodokanal” will start reconstruction of the third northern collector in Kazan. The total length of the networks will exceed 2.3 km. The reconstruction work is complicated by holes on the damaged collector – it will begin only after the elimination of damages. Now emergency work is being carried out simultaneously at four sites. The progress of work on one of them - on Chistopolskaya Street - was inspected by the Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin.

Modern technology allows increasing the period of service of the pipes up to 50 years

“We plan to apply modern polymer sleeve technology. This is a special fabric impregnated with polymer resin with a thickness of 3 to 5 cm, - explained Andrey Egorov, director of the MUE “Vodokanal”. - The length of one sleeve is from 50 to 70 m. That is, every 50-70 m, a pit will be made, a sleeve will be laid underground, then it will be straightened by a stream of water and fill all existing niches. And after polymerization, a new section of the collector will be ready, the workers will move on to the next one”.

This method has been used worldwide for a long time.

In general, 1.6 billion rubles will be allocated for the reconstruction of the collector under the Vodokanal investment program, the first stage will cost 400 million rubles.

Since the repair of separate sections of the collector will be accompanied by temporary road closures, I.Metshin drew attention to the need to inform citizens about this in advance. “There are pedestrians, cars, housing, business around the reconstruction sites, so it is very important to work in dialogue with Kazan residents who live and work nearby, - the head of the city stressed. – If roads are closed, traffic will change, it is necessary that everyone knows about it in advance”.

The reconstruction will be carried out in three stages. At the first stage, a section of 760 meters along Chistopolskaya Street will be repaired. The second stage will take place on a site of 850 meters along Yamasheva Ave., the third – on Amirkhan Street 700 m long.

Preparatory work: elimination of holes, pumping of drains, laying of pipelines and construction of temporary sewerage pump stations

Reconstruction is preceded by a huge preparatory work, which first of all requires the elimination of all damaged areas. For 10 years, 41 holes have occurred at the third northern collector, of which 26 have occurred only in 2021 and January of this year. At the moment, almost all of them have been eliminated.

The Mayor set the task to complete emergency work by the end of January.

The reinforced concrete collector was installed 36 years ago, for such objects it is not much, its designed period of service is 50 years. However, modern chemicals have influenced, A. Egorov explained.

The reconstruction works will not affect the local residents in any way – they will fully receive all water supply and sanitation services.

“The first stage will be held from February to August, the second - from April to July. Moreover, all work will be carried out in parallel, and immediately after completion, landscaping will be restored”, - said the director of Vodokanal.

“The margin of safety of the Soviet times utilities is running out, a federal program is needed”

The Mayor noted the sad state of the sewerage facilities of Kazan. “Most of the utilities are already dilapidated. Unfortunately, the overhaul of utilities does not keep pace with the development of the city, the construction of new houses – he said. – We have already done a lot: for example, we built a new Zarechnaya sewerage pumping station, which allowed us to increase the number of housing and social facilities being commissioned. But this is still not enough for a comprehensive solution to the problems. This is a band-aid approach, we need a federal program”.

The issue of dilapidation of utility networks is relevant for all Russian cities, I.Metshin added. “The margin of safety of the Soviet times utilities is running out, so we need to pay attention to this nationwide. We hope for the assistance of the government”, - he said.
