Visitors got acquainted with folk traditions and participated in master classes at the festival in the Black Lake Park.
A fest of Mari culture took place in Kazan as part of the Tree of Life project. Yesterday, the citizens got acquainted with the traditions of the Mari people, learned to dance tyvyrdyk, play tumyr and shuvyr, as well as to make spell caster dolls in the Black Lake Park.
At the events of the Tree of Life project, a cultural evening will be dedicated to each of the Volga peoples, said Guzel Sagitova, Deputy Head of the Executive Committee of Kazan. “Chuvash, Mari, Udmurts and Mordovians are struggling to preserve their languages, traditions and customs and need to hold such holidays. I think we are on the right track, and we will continue this work in the future,”-she said.
The fest began at 18:00, but Kazan residents began to gather at the venues even before the opening ceremony – they were attracted by music, bright costumes and colorful objects of decorative and applied art.
The visitors were able to see an exposition of national costumes, where the outfits of mountain, meadow and eastern Mari people were presented. Nearby there was a table with folk musical instruments – a drum (tumyr), bagpipes (shuvyr) and a trumpet (pucha). Musician Alexander Slavin talked about the features of the instruments and conducted master classes for everyone. The first one was dedicated to playing the Mari bagpipe, which has preserved in its original form. A.Slavin performed the sound of an unusual instrument. The creative team performed a folk dance to traditional Mari music.
Nearby the musical instruments there were tables with objects of decorative and applied art - napkins, towels, carpets and amulets. As the costumes, they were decorated with a red hardanger embroidery. Traditionally, needlewomen embroidered the Mari symbol of the sun, geometric figures, animals, birds and flowers. Here, Kazan residents could also create souvenirs for themselves – a spell caster doll, a handkerchief with embroidery and a flag with the Mari symbol of the sun.
There was also entertainment for young visitors at the festival – they studied proverbs, fished and read folk tales. The playground was popular not among children, but also adults. Posters with Russian and Mari proverbs were installed here. Those who wished could collect proverbs from cards with letters of the Mari alphabet.
Alongside the work of the sites, creative teams performed folk dances and played musical instruments.
At 19:00, a master class on tyvyrdyk folk dance began in the amphitheater of the park, where Kazan residents learned the dance and united in a flash mob to the Mari hits performed by the multinational folk group Zakaria. After that, an ethnic disco began in the park – DJ Malsi music played his own set of Mari dance music.
The Tree of Life educational project will introduce citizens to the culture of the Finno-Ugric and Turkic peoples, their history and native language. During the summer, the city will host events dedicated to Udmurt, Chuvash and Mordovian culture. The fests are scheduled for July 28, August 11 and 25.
The project is organized under the Year of Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of Russia. It is implemented by the Kazan Mayor’s Office and the Assembly of Peoples with the support of the Commission under Tatarstan President on the preservation and development of the Tatar language and native languages of representatives of peoples living in the republic.
