All the historical elements of the City Hall, built in 1854, were preserved during the renovation
The Kazan City Hall is completing its first renovation since the reconstruction of the building in 2005. At the final stage, three chandeliers with a total weight of more than a ton is being washed. It is planned to complete the work by June 21, on the eve of the first constituent meeting of the Association of Cities of the BRICS+ countries in the capital of Tatarstan. Part of the official events, which will be attended by more than 100 mayors, is planned to be held at the City Hall.
The renovation of the City Hall is being completed today – the first since the reconstruction of the building in 2005, which was carried out to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of Kazan. Waterproofing was carried out at the facility, the roof was repaired, the facade was painted, the air conditioning and ventilation systems, heating and sewerage were renewed.
Architectural lighting will decorate the front, new gutters will be installed on the roof, and lampposts will be installed at the central entrance, said Dina Latfullina, head of the Kazan City Hall.
All historical elements were preserved during the work. The coat of arms of Kazan was also updated on the facade, and after the connection of electricity, the operation of the outdoor clock will be restored. As soon as all the work is completed, the national flags will be displayed.
One of the painstaking tasks was cleaning three large crystal chandeliers decorating the Pillared Hall of the Town Hall. Six people wash one chandelier for several hours.
The chandeliers, made of Swarovski crystal, were brought from Austria in 2005. The central one weighs about 450 kg, and two more weigh 300 kg each. Huge lamps are washed once a year, light bulbs are changed at the same time and several thousand lenses are cleaned.
“The building is currently undergoing renovation work, so there is a lot of construction dust. It was necessary to clean the equipment. Chandeliers are usually washed during the period when events are not held in the City Hall in summer,”- said Dina Latfullina.
A mechanical winch is installed in the attic, with the help of which the chandeliers are manually lowered down on cables. Two people are monitoring this process. In order to reach the chandeliers, they are placed at a certain level from the floor. With the help of glass cleaning products, workers in special cotton gloves wipe each stone. As Dina Latfullina noted, attentiveness and accuracy are important in this work.
“The main thing is that the lenses do not detach from each other, and the fittings remain intact. It is necessary to make sure that the beads do not detach when lifting the chandeliers. Otherwise, they will have to be lowered again and then raised,”- she explained.
The windows also lost their color and brightness during the years, so they were restored. As a finishing touch, a new carpet will be laid on the central staircase of the building, and with the assistance of the Kazan Department of Culture, a white grand piano will be installed in the banquet hall for concerts.
All work is scheduled to be completed by June 21, on the eve of the first constituent meeting of the Association of Cities of the BRICS+ countries in Kazan. Part of the official events, which will be attended by more than 100 mayors, is planned to take place at the City Hall.
