R.Gafarov on the labor market in Kazan: “The wave of unemployed has pulled back”

During the year, the number of unemployed decreased by almost 4 times.

In Kazan, the number of unemployed decreased by 3.7 times over the year, the labor market returned to pre-pandemic rates. Last year, twenty thousand residents were employed out of twenty-six thousand who applied to the employment centers. Director of the Kazan Employment Center Timur Mullin reported on the current situation on the labor market at the Business Monday meeting.

The employment service helped to find jobs to almost 80% of job seekers

In 2021, more than 26 thousand people were seeking jobs via the employment service – this is two times less than a year earlier, when a record number of citizens were out of job due to the pandemic. Of these, 20 thousand people were able to find job, including about 14 thousand unemployed. The share of employed persons from the number of those who applied for assistance in finding a job was 78%.

In the beginning of 2021, 17,088 unemployed people were registered in the employment centers of the city, and by December 31, their number had decreased to 4,671 people. “Thus, the number of unemployed decreased by 3.7 times over the year”, - T.Mullin noted.

As of January 1, the registered unemployment rate in Kazan was 0.7% of the workforce, which is lower than the national average. Today, the unemployment rate in Russia is 4.3%, reminded the head of the Executive Committee Rustem Gafarov. “Last week, President Vladimir Putin said that unemployment keeps at historic lows. Of course, we are not claiming that there is no room for improvement in our economy: all enterprises, including municipal, are suffering inflation. But the wave of unemployed has pulled back”.

Employers received subsidies in the amount of 5 million rubles

While implementation incentives to employers, they were provided with subsidies in the amount of more than 5 million rubles, which allowed to employ 249 people. According to T.Mullin, subsidies were received by such companies as Gorvodzelenkhoz, Sodruzhestvo, the Elekon factory, the property management company Yutny Dom, Aromat, the Department of Food and Social Nutrition and others.

This year, state support for employers will remain, but it will be focused at employment of young people under 30, Timur Mullin said.

“It is impossible to overcome staffing shortages in some industries”

At the same time, despite decrease in the number of unemployed, another problem has become urgent. As the analysis of the labor market has shown, there is an imbalance of supply and demand.

“Today, in some sectors of the economy, the staffing demand significantly exceeds the number of applicants. This creates a certain deficit in the real sector of the economy”, - T.Mullin noted. According to him, the level of competition among employers is now extremely high. “It is impossible to overcome staffing shortage in a number of industries by the currently unemployed”, - said the head of the Employment Center.

One of the solutions to this problem is involvement of students, young people and training citizens according to targeted applications from employers, the speaker added. He reminded that the Employment Center established the Council of Staffing Services of the city's enterprises, which trains personnel at the demand of the employer. Thus, tram and trolleybus drivers are trained for the MUE Metroelectrotrans, cooks and bakers are trained for the hotel and catering enterprises.
