R.Gafarov: “By the next winter season, the monitoring system of snow removal vehicles will cover driveways and yard territories”

Since the beginning of the winter period, more than 1 million tons of snow have been removed from the streets of Kazan – 200 thousand tons more than a year before.

Last winter in Kazan became one of the snowiest over the years. Since the beginning of the season, more than 1 million 150 thousand tons of snow have been removed from the streets of the city, which is 200 thousand tons more than a year before. For the first time, a modernized system for monitoring the operation of vehicles on routes was used. “By the next winter season, the monitoring system will be updated and fully used not only on the main highways, but also on driveways and yard territories,”- said Rustem Gafarov, head of the Executive Committee of Kazan, today at the Business Monday meeting.

The road cleaning routes with full coverage of streets were included in the program, as well as sensors were installed in the cleaning vehicles of utilities enterprises and on all leased equipment. “We have completely updated the mechanism and switched to a single operator”, - said Igor Kulyazhev, Deputy Head of the Executive Committee of Kazan.

Now each vehicle will have its own route attached to it. It allowed monitoring the volume of work online.

About 700 thousand tons of snow were disposed of at snow melting points

According to weather forecasters, from December 2021 to March 2022, 176 mm of snow fell, which is 77% above the norm. “One of the challenges for the road services was heavy snowfalls that fell in short periods of time. In addition, during one day in January and February, half of the monthly norm fell out in the city”, - Igor Kulyazhev noted.

Despite the warm weather, snow removal works are still underway in the city. Special attention, according to I. Kulyazhev, is paid to sites prone to flooding and village roads. In total, 700 thousand tons or 60% of the total collected snow were processed at snow melting points during the season. In addition, the remaining part of the snow was disposed of at 11 temporary storage sites. “All sites at the end of the winter period will be cleared of the dirt and garbage that got on them together with snow”, - the deputy head of the Executive Committee said. During the season, road services used a reagent and a sand-salt mix to combat ice –65 thousand tons of deicing materials were used.

On average, 725 snow removal vehicles operated daily in the city. “Today, there are 524 vehicles at the enterprises of the city, while only 498 or 95% are provided with drivers and machine operators in one shift”, - I.Kulyazhev noted. During abnormal snowfalls, the equipment must work at least two full shifts. Six hundred road workers were engaged in cleaning sidewalks in Kazan, with a standard seasonal demand of 1,400 people. The total shortage of personnel in the winter season was about 1,200 people.

In summer, 260 vehicles will be used for cleaning the streets

The winter road maintenance period ends on April 15. Now, according to the deputy head of the Executive Committee, contractors are starting to re-equip vehicles for work in the summer season. Two hundred and sixty vehicles will be involved.

The key task during the transition period is to clean roads from accumulated dirt and garbage over the winter, and when stable warm weather will come, road washing will begin. “We have already started cleaning roads and landscaping elements from dirt and road garbage. The entire street and road network with an area of more than 21 million square meters should be cleaned by the beginning of May”, - I.Kulyazhev concluded.
