The marabous became new inhabitants of the Zambezi River zoo in Kazan. A pair of birds arrived in Kazan from Germany at the end of June. The marabous have been quarantined for 30 days, and now visitors to the zoo can see them.
The birds live in an enclosure for antelopes, and during the day go for a walk in the so-called savanna. The newcomers are neighboring with old-timers of the zoo-ostriches Masha and Vasya.
The Kazan zoo already has experience of maintenance such birds. A male marabou has been living here for about 10 years. The new birds do not contact with the old resident and are kept in different enclosures. “The marabous can’t live together in a limited area – they can fight, they need space and freedom”, - said Tatyana Buslova, head of the ungulates department of the zoo.
The marabous out in the wild eat rodents, snakes, frogs, lizards, termites. In the zoo, the meal of birds includes red fish, ox heart, and a favorite delicacy – chicken.
The marabous live according to a set schedule. At 9 am, they eat, and then they walk around savanna with ostriches and wildebeests. Animals are in good contact with each other. In the evening, the birds return to the indoor enclosures.
When the cold weather gets cold, the marabou will not go out, because they do not tolerate frosts.
