The birds will be quarantined for a month.
Today new inhabitants appeared in the “Zambezi River” zoo - a pair of ostriches Vasya and Masha have been moved from the old part of the Kazan zoo. Birds settled in warm winter enclosures, where they adapt to new conditions under the supervision of the experts.
Last winter the ostriches arrived to Kazan zoo from Yoshkar-Ola at the age of three, and this year they turned four years. These are domesticated birds-before moving to the zoo, they lived in the farm. They have become a couple recently and this year, the birds already had the first eggs laying, but the chicks did not hatch out –the temperature conditions were not appropriate. “This happens, the chicks do not appear from the first clutch,” explained Elena Varfolomeeva, a PR-specialist – But in the new zoo conditions the ostriches will have an offspring".
After the ostriches were released into the new enclosures, they began to explore the new habitat with curiosity.
During the month ostriches will be quarantined under the supervision of veterinarians. At this time, they will get used to the new conditions and after the birds will be given the opportunity to walk outside. “They have been living in our conditions for a long time, they are accustomed to the cold and low temperatures if they are released for a short period of time,” explained E. Varfolomeeva.
In the summer time ostriches will spend time at the big outdoor area where they will adjoin zebras, antelopes and, in the future, with giraffes. The conditions in this enclosure are as close to natural as possible.
For information, last week 18 hamadryads and a pair of dik-diks moved in a new part of the zoo and in the near future it is planned to move blue antelopes to the new enclosures. The Zambezi River will open by the New year eve.
