Maslenitsa in Kazan: Petrushka’s theater, ditties competition and walking on stilts

Folk festival dedicated to the end of winter and welcoming of spring will be held at the Kremlin Embankment and Lake Lebyazhye.

In this weekend, Kazan will host folk festival dedicated to the farewell of winter and the welcoming of spring. Maslenitsa is a bright and cheerful holiday that has been celebrated in Russia since pagan times, citizens and visitors of the city will be able to get acquainted with its traditions in the upcoming weekend. Events will be staged at several sites.
  • Maslenitsa at the Kremlin Embankment, 13 March at 11.00 am
    • Kazan residents will have an opportunity to participate in Russian folk games and get prizes, as well as ditties competition, youth dances and games, go skating, see a performance with fairy-tale characters, Petrushka’s theater and see circus performance.

      On the territory of the Kremlin Embankment, there will be a crafts fair with decorative and applied arts, master classes on walking on stilts and folk dances. Visitors will be able to taste pilaf and barbeque, pancakes, pastries and hot drinks, according to the organizers.

      The celebration will end with a traditional ceremony-the burning of Lady Maslenitsa (a doll of straw and rags).
  • Maslenitsa at Lake Lebyazhye, 14 March at 10.00 am
    • Traditionally, the celebration of Maslenitsa will be held on the territory of Lake Maloe Lebyazhye. There will be a food court, playgrounds with winter activities and hockey in felt boots, photo zones and animation zones.

      The concert will begin at 10.00, the burning of Lady Maslenitsa will take place at 12.50, after that the concert program will continue, the Press Office of the administration of the Kirovsky and Moskovsky districts reports.

      Festive events will be also organized in the cultural centers of the villages and residential area of the city, the Department of Culture reported.
