“Kazanysh – 2022”: hubs, growing and immersive schools

Ilsur Metshin takes part in the discussion on new school formats.

At the Kazanysh All-Russian Architectural and Construction Forum, a discussion was held on the evolution of the school space took place today. Experts and participants exchanged opinions on how to improve existing buildings, what types of schools will be in demand in the near future and how architecture affects students and teachers. The Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin took part in the discussion. He noted that this year’s forum topic “A City For Young People” is interesting not only to local architects, but also to visiting experts.

The Mayor drew attention to the fact that schools of a new format are being built in the capital of Tatarstan – according to the approved federal standard for 1,224 students. Along with this, present educational institutions are being renovated. “As soon as we open new schools with swimming pools, I immediately get a lot of appeals from other schools. Thanks to Tatarstan President, under the republican program over the past 10 years we have overhauled 142 schools out of 200,”- I. Metshin said.

Opening the meeting, Elena Aralova, moderator and CEO of ED Architecture, said that in recent years, the spaces of schools have significantly evolved. “Architectural projects of educational institutions have become designers’ projects, and buildings have become intellectually saturated. In addition, schools are built based on economic feasibility. Now educational institutions are a driver of society's development and a powerful social tool,”- she noted.

School spaces are also being transformed in Kazan. Along with the renovation of classrooms, sports halls, entrance groups in schools, canteens are being modernized. Ilsur Metshin mentioned this in his speech: “Colleagues proposed a bold idea to create school restaurants, and today there are 144 canteens in this format,”- the Mayor reminded. “A school restaurant is a cozy place with eating and serving areas, as well as wi–fi. At the same time, we teach children to eat healthy – there are no sodas and junk food. The hot meals were served at 37% of schools, today this number is 82%, despite the fact that the number of schoolchildren has grown to 160 thousand.”

During the discussion, the speakers discussed which format of schools will be in demand in the near future. Elena Aralova told the participants about growing schools, which imply the construction of new buildings as the residential complex is populated, hub schools where children will receive in-depth knowledge in certain areas, distributed schools in which there are no regular classrooms, while the available spaces are multifunctional, immersive schools and project activities.

“The architects from Kazan, Tatarstan and from other cities and regions participate in the forum. It is important that you come, listen and discuss issues with us. We need such collaboration and exchange of opinions,”- the Mayor said. He also suggested creating an online platform for the forum participants. “We need an online platform so that we maintain communication,”- he said. “We welcome our colleagues. We are open, we want to see these ideas in implemented projects,”- I. Metshin summed up.

For reference, the second Kazanysh All-Russian architectural and construction forum opened in the Uram extreme park the day before. The main topic of discussions is “A City For Young People”.
