The Kazan airport was named after Gabdulla Tukay

The corresponding decree was signed by President Vladimir Putin.

(KZN.RU, May 31). The Kazan International Airport was officially named after the Tatar poet Gabdulla Tukay. The corresponding decree was signed by President Vladimir Putin.

The Airport “Begishevo” was named after Nikolay Lemaev, the Soviet statesman, director of the production association “Nizhnekamskneftekhim”, the Minister of Chemical and Petrochemical Industry of the USSR.

The project dedicated to the assignment of the names of the great Russian compatriots to the international airports of Russia involved airports throughout the country, including the Kazan International Airport and the Begishevo Airport. At the final stage of the competition from 12 to 30 of November, each resident of the RF could choose one Russian airport from the general list and vote “one vote – one airport – one name”. The voting was conducted simultaneously in several ways: on the website ВеликиеИмена.рф, on social networks, and by phone.

The results of the final vote on the choice of names for 47 airports were summarized in December last year. In total, 5 million 525 thousand 553 people took part in it. In most regions, the winners are the names that gained the most votes.

The short-list of voting for the name of the Kazan International Airport includes the names of prominent figures Gabdulla Tukay, Musa Jalil, and Andrey Tupolev.

The winner was the name of Gabdulla Tukay, the great Tatar poet, one of the founders of the modern literary Tatar language, occupying the same place in Tatar poetry as Alexander Pushkin in Russian.
