Today, Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin met with a delegation from the Republic of South Africa, which arrived in the city to participate in the BRICS Summit. The parties discussed mutually beneficial cooperation and the implementation of joint projects.
The delegation from South Africa included Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition Mpho Franklyn Parks Tau; his assistant, Tumelo Motsepe; Deputy Director of Public Relations at the Ministry, Kamil Alli; and a representative from the Russian office of South Africa's Ministry of Trade and Industry, Irina Cheburkova.
For reference, the delegation from South Africa is headed by President Cyril Ramaphosa. They were welcomed at the airport by Rustam Minnikhanov, the Rais (Head) of Tatarstan, and the Mayor of Kazan.
Kazan maintains relations with cities in South Africa and with the Association of Local Authorities in South Africa (SALGA), through inter-municipal cooperation. Active collaboration has also been established within the World Organization of United Cities and Local Authorities.
This June, a delegation from South Africa participated in the founding conference of the Association of Cities and Municipalities from BRICS+ states. Bheke Stofile, president of the South African Local Government Association, was one of the first to support the establishment of this organization.
In September 2023, a delegation from South Africa visited Kazan to take part in a forum that brought together cities as part of the International Forum «Russia and China: mutually beneficial cooperation». In May 2023, a retreat called «Cities of Eurasia and Global Trends» took place in Kazan, which was held by UCLG-Eurasia and the Kazan Mayor’s Office. The delegation from South Africa, led by SALGA President Bheke Stofile, took part in this event. Earlier, in 2019, representatives from Kazan, led by Ilsur Metshin, visited South Africa to attend the 6th World Summit of UCLG.
This week, the BRICS Summit takes place in Kazan. Representatives from about 36 countries, 22 heads of states, as well as six international organizations have arrived in the city.
