Ilsur Metshin: “Reconstruction of wastewater treatment facilities will bring the ecology of Kazan to a new level”

In three years, the entire complex of biological treatment facilities will be reconstructed in Kazan, which will allow treating up to 650,000 m3 of wastewater per day.

A large-scale reconstruction of biological sewage treatment facilities launched in Kazan. It will be completed by 2023. After the reconstruction, the Vodokanal facility will be able to receive and treat up to 650,000 m3 of wastewater per day.

The reconstruction is carried out under the “Volga Improvement” federal project of the Ecology national project and the regional program for the construction and reconstruction of wastewater treatment facilities, 6.3 billion rubles have been allocated from the federal and republican budgets for this purpose.

Ilsur Metshin, the Mayor of Kazan, told reporters about the implementation of one of the largest environmental projects in the country during a press tour at the MUE Vodokanal. “It is very important what kind of water we drink and return back to the Volga. Today, thanks to the federal project and the republican program, we are among the first in the country to be able to start the reconstruction of wastewater treatment facilities. The residents do not see this work, but it is an important project for us and for future generations”, - the Mayor said.

Old sewage treatment plants are no longer able to cope with modern chemicals

The starting point of the press tour was the existing biological treatment facilities of Kazan, which will be reconstructed. 450,000 m3 of wastewater are delivered to the treatment facilities every day, where they are treated, and then returned to the Volga. In recent years, the excess of a number of substances has been detected in the treated water. This is caused by the fact that the citizens began to use various chemical agents more actively.

After the reconstruction of the facilities, the water treatment will become more efficient – the water will be cleaner than when drawing from the river for sewerage. “This will affect the lives of a huge number of people. 60 million people live in the territory near the Volga basin – this is almost 40% of the population of Russia,”- the head of the city said.

The work on the modernization of the water treatment facilities includes the construction of 33 new facilities and the reconstruction of 22 existing facilities.

“After the implementation of the project, we will be able to receive and clean 650,000 m3 of sewage water. This is important for the construction, expansion of the city and connection of new facilities to the sewerage system”, - said Andrey Yegorov, Director of the MUE Vodokanal.

During the reconstruction, the collection and treatment of wastewater is not interrupted

Then the journalists visited the construction site of the aerotanks. A. Yegorov explained that during the reconstruction, wastewater treatment in several stages is not interrupted.

“Currently, the process of filling the aerotanks and filters-settling tanks in underway. Preparatory work is being carried out for the construction of a blowing station, – said A. Yegorov. - Besides, work is underway to build the foundation for the laboratory building. The reliability of the treatment facilities will increase several times after the completion of the work, they will be operated for at least another 50-60 years at a qualitatively different level. The most important thing is that we are improving the Volga River”.

The second stage will be held in 2023-2024. It includes the reconstruction of the bar screen building No. 1, the grit chamber of the first stage, eight primary settling tanks, seven aerotanks, eight secondary settling tanks and other types of work.
