The renovation of the facades of the Church of St. Nikolaos of Tula, the buildings for abbots and nuns is nearing completion
The reconstruction of the buildings at the Bogoroditsky Monastery in Kazan is underway - it is planned to complete the facade work on three sites in July: the church of St. Nikolaos of Tula, the building for abbots and nuns. Up to 500 workers are involved in the project. The Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin inspected the progress of the reconstruction today.
Vice-Mayor of Kazan, Denis Kalinkin, and Abbot Mark (Vilensky), reported on the progress of the work. The renovation is underway at the church of St. Nikolaos of Tula at an area of 3,400 sq.m., the abbot's residence (3,000 sq.m.), and a building for nuns (2,100 sq.m.). The Eurostroyholding+ company is responsible for the restoration work, which started last spring. Dismantling has already been completed, foundations and walls have been reinforced, emergency repairs have been made to the brickwork, facades have been plastered, and windows have been installed.
“Unfortunately, the church of Saint Nikolaos of Tula suffered significant damage in the last century, all the porticos were demolished. An incredible effort was spent to restore these elements,”- said Guzel Mironova, the architect. She explained that only four of the original load-bearing walls remain from the church, which were rebuilt to accommodate a tobacco factory.
Presently, experts are restoring the elements of the building, as well as re-creating the portico, pediment with columns, and dome with 12 windows. The other buildings, including the parish school, have not been so badly damaged, as they were used as dormitories during Soviet times.
This year, all three buildings received the status of cultural heritage sites of regional importance. After the exterior work is completed, a similarly large-scale phase will begin - interior decoration, which will take some time. Today, the Kazan Bogoroditsky Monastery consists of almost a dozen buildings. At its center is the recently reconstructed Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, and the Holy Cross Church and St. Sophia Church are open to visitors.
