The BRICS Games in Kazan will open with a theatrical performance on Russia Day

Over 4,700 athletes will come to the capital of the republic of Tatarstan to participate in the competitions

The BRICS Games will open in Kazan on June 12, Russia Day. The opening ceremony will take place in the Universiade Village in the format of a theatrical performance. In total, more than 4,700 athletes from 74 countries, including 10 BRICS member states, will come to Kazan for the competition. This was announced by Deputy head of the Kazan Executive Committee Guzel Sagitova.

“The new international sports competitions are very important. We will make every effort to make this another reason for pride for Kazan and our sports country,”- said Ilsur Metshin, Mayor of the city.

The BRICS Games will take place on June 10-26. Seventeen sports venues will be used for the competition. Now they are being renovated.

Ilsur Metshin reminded that this year the city marks 11th anniversary of the World Summer Universiade in Kazan, so many sports venues require renovation.

“In this sense, the BRICS Games are a blessing from above, they are held not earlier and not later, but just at the moment when it is time for renovation. We will be able to implement it as part of the BRICS Games preparation project,”- the Mayor said.

Competitions will be held in 29 disciplines. Currently, the Russian Ministry of Sports is considering the inclusion of one more discipline in the program – acrobatic rock and roll.

389 sets of medals are planned to be awarded at the competition. Over 3,600 foreign athletes and about 1,100 Russian athletes will compete for the medals. The regulations for the BRICS Games and the preliminary hourly schedule of competitions have already been drawn up – it will be finally approved after May 15.
