The second cell of the Vostochny landfill have already accepted more than 603,000 tons of waste from the total limit of 1.6 million tons
The Vostochny landfill in Kazan has already been filled by more than a third: over 603,000 tons of waste from the total limit of 1.6 million tons were delivered to the second cell. Meanwhile, garbage from neighboring municipalities is also delivered to the landfill. According to the Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin the capacity of the landfill will not exceed two years if the current waste deliveries continue.
«Our initiative to develop modern landfills that meet all environmental standards has faced unforeseen consequences. We created the infrastructure for the needs of Kazan, not for accepting waste from neighboring districts such as Laishevo, Pestretsy, Vysokaya Gora and Zelenodolsk. Other districts, such as Arsk, have their own landfills and solve their problems within their district», – Ilsur Metshin said.
The Mayor noted that the environmental burden on facilities is growing due to extra garbage, while neighboring areas «have been inactive for the past five years».
«This is unacceptable. It is necessary to immediately escalate this issue in order to stop bringing solid waste from other municipalities», – Ilsur Metshin said. He instructed to prepare official letters and appeals to the Government of the Republic and to the Rais (Head) of Tatarstan regarding the prohibition of waste removal from outside the city.
Yevgeny Chekashov, General Director of Management Company PZhKH, said that the regional operator, together with the city administration, is working to lease a land plot for the construction of the third cell of the Vostochny landfill, the design of which is scheduled for 2026.
