A participant in the BRICS Literary Forum has come to Kazan to compile a list of significant works by Tatar authors for further translation
Azerbaijan and Tatarstan are linked not only by their Turkic roots but also by their literature. Many works of Tatar writers are translated into Azerbaijan, and one of the most famous writers is the poet, publicist, and literary critic, Gabdulla Tukay. At the BRICS Literary Forum, Etimad Bashkechid, from the Azerbaijani Translation Centre under the Cabinet of Ministers, spoke about the demand for Tukay's work and the need to find new worthy Tatar books for translation.
Gabdulla Tukaн can be viewed from various perspectives: as a writer, philosopher, or person who thought about the Tatar people and nation. «Who was Gabdulla Tukay to the Tatars and how significant was he for Tatarstan?» - Etimad Bashkeshid asked. “What does the poet represent in terms of the broader Turkic world and the world at large? The amount of work he accomplished in such a short life is simply unbelievable. He did a great job,”- he said.
The book market in Azerbaijan has been well-established for a long time, and if a book does not appeal to readers, it simply is not translated. This is not the case with the work of Gabdulla Tukay, however. «There is always a demand for his books, as students of philological faculties and people studying history or the Turkic language are interested in his works. There is a for Gabdulla Tukay books in Azerbaijan, as well as in Turkey. People buy his books willingly, without any need to force them to read his works», - the writer shared.
