Аidar Shamsutdinov of future trilingual school: «There is no greater value than language»

The headmaster of school №165 is talking about unique polylingual complex which will be constructed based on educational institution.

Soon a unique educational complex with kindergartens, polylingual school, campus for talented children and teachers, as well as country centre of supplementary education in Arsky region of Tatarstan will be built in Kazan. The idea of trilingual school belongs to Mintimer Shaimiev, the State Councilor of the RT. Yesterday he presented thr project to the journalists. Totally in the republic it is planned to construct 6 polylingual complexes - there will be two special schools in Kazan, and one for Naberezhnye Chelny, Almetevsk, Nizhnekamsk and Elabuga. Designing and construction of the complexes will be implemented stage by stage. The first polylingual complex will be created in Kazan based on general secondary school №165. It will be named «Adymnar - to knowledges and peace». Aidar Ildarovich, what is the main conception of polylingual educational complex?

A.Sh.: It is necessary to understand that language always has two functions: it helps us to get information and broadcast it. In polylingual school language acts not only as studying subject, but also first of all as a primary means of obtaining and sharing knowledge. I am sure that there is no greater value than language.

I've been working at the school since 1996 and being a teacher, a head teacher, a headmaster, I created the polylingual person of the pupils. 10-12 years ago, when Timur Lazovich (Alibaev, the head of the Aviastroitelny and Novo-Savinovsky districts’ administration) entrusted me to head school №165, and then I had an idea to teach here intensive English language. Many people told me that there were a lot of such schools in Kazan and we needed to have another people. But when foreign language teaching had began for 5 hours a week in primary school, and 7 hours a week in n secondary school, then we saw children's mentality changes.

Besides Mintimer Sharipovich told that the main conception is peace and harmony through school. We will promote the philosophy of peace through human respect and tolerant attitude. One of the most important principles is ethnic culture.

What is uniqueness of this educational complex?

A.Sh.: The polylingual complex will be designed for 2400 children. Its infrastructure is unique: there are more than 50 thousand sq.m educational areas. These are transformed audiences, assembly halls, a few swimming pools, multifunctional sports halls, athletic fields, school restaurants, campus for 240 places and own country centre of supplementary education which has over 700 hectares of land in Arsky region of Tatarstan, with stable and school hippodrome. In the country centre it is planned to organise year-round shifts. The appropriate linguistic environment will be created for children here.

We will assist pupils in their professional orientation, and to give a chance to try ourselves in one or another profession due to school quantoruim, It is a Technology Park, where necessary conditions and environment will be created for children. I would like a pen to be written «Made in Russia», and each thing would have these words.

I believe that it is necessary to know how to earn your bread. If the child knows the price of each product in the plate, when he has made something in the life, he grows up a completely different person. It is important to teach children to work with their hands. For example, we assume that the school agronomic business company will work in the country centre.

Mintimer Shaimiev's made sound that this year it is planned to build a block by the school №165. How will it look like?

A.Sh.: Only elementary school to 32 classes of full day will be in the existing school building. There will be educational classes, rooms of supplementary education, canteen, sports hall, swimming pool, library in new building.

The polylingual school will be built in the Novo-Savinovsky district of Kazan. An integrated system will be followed in school, enabling tuition to be given in three languages: Russian, Tatar and English. The secondary school (the educational facility for for children in grades 5-11) will be located on Bondarenko street. There will be educational classes, 2 swimming pools, 2 sports and assembly halls, library and canteen in 3 floor building for 1224 places with a total area of more than 25 thousand sq.m.

Moreover we will need a campus for 240 places. The teachers will have an opportunity to live there. The schools will be full-time schools. An integrated system will be followed in school, enabling tuition to be given in Russian, Tatar and English languages.

The complexes will also consist of kindergartens, where children will receive a preschool preparation and education, as well as the centres of supplementary education.

«One of the important subjects which should be studied in English is geography»

You told an integrated system would be followed in school, enabling tuition to be given in three languages. How will it work?

A.Sh.: Parents can choose both bilingual, and polylingual education. It is planned Fine arts and Crafts lessons from Year 3 onwards will be taught in English. From Year 7 onwards Geography, Maths, Biology will be taught in English. Up to Year 9 History, Social studies, Nature will be taught in Tatar language.

There are subjects which it is important to teach in certain language. For example, one of the important subjects which should be studied in English is geography. Here is social and economic language, language connected with nature, with person's life and the activities, it that subject which prepares a child to the society.

We live outside of language. And the most simple way to learn language is reading books in original. The pupils of Year 8 read books in original at home. For example, students of Year 11 read «The Moon and Sixpence» by Somerset Maugham. It is a difficult postmodern literature, but when the child reads this 500-page novel in English, he will keep this in mind.

How educational process will be done? Will the teachers of school №165 teach children? Or will you have a new teaching staff?

A.Sh.: We will keep our teaching staff, but also we will have an additional set of teachers, as the amount of pupils and the area of the school will expand. Now we have many teachers who have a language competence.

I find it necessary that the teacher should be interested in the subject, should express desire to develop. We have a truly united team. Therefore moral principles work here. I really cultivate it in my team.

Besides we'd like our school to join the association of UNESCO schools, and we have already begun to work in this direction. First of all, I wanted to build relations with that schools which work as well in polylingual sphere: in Switzerland, Catalonia, Wales. They exchange pupils, experience, and are hold a joint conferences.

When will the school open?

A.Sh.: It is planned that the school will open on September 1 in 2020, so the President of Tatarstan has made sound. Work goes without stoping. I think this complex will be very marketable in our city.
