Deputy Head of the Executive Committee of Kazan Iskander Giniyatullin told Kazan students how not to become a victim of carbon monoxide

<p> Over the past three years, 296 cases of carbon monoxide poisoning have been recorded in Kazan. As many as 401 people were injured, while 26 students were poisoned with varying degrees of severity, and five more students died. In this regard, the Kazan Executive Committee initiated a series of meetings with young people to remind students about safety protocols. The first meeting took place today at the Unics Concert Hall, which was attended by more than 150 students of Kazan Federal University (KFU). </p> <p> Iskander Giniyatullin, Deputy Head of the Executive Committee, addressed the audience. The meeting began with an interactive survey: the organizers decided to check students’ awareness of the safety rules. </p> <p> «I asked for a meeting with you to discuss a very important issue that could really cost your lives. It is important to understand the causes of this tragedy and know how to prevent it», – Iskander Giniyatullin addressed the students. </p> <p> He recalled that carbon monoxide (CO) is called a silent killer. It has no color or smell, and its density is comparable to that of air, making it invisible. Gas is formed during the operation of any fuel combustion devices: gas heaters, stoves, and even car engines in conditions of lack of oxygen. </p> <p> In Kazan, more than three thousand houses are equipped with gas heaters, and at 500 of them gas heaters are installed in the bathrooms. </p> <p> For the safe operation of the gas heaters, 10 cubic meters of fresh air are required per cubic meter of burnt gas. If there is not enough oxygen, methane does not turn into relatively harmless carbon dioxide during combustion, but into deadly carbon monoxide. </p> <p> «The main message of this meeting: ventilate the premises as often as possible», - Iskander Giniyatullin said.  </p>
