The city's storm collector system reaches 517 kilometers, and the number of rain collectors is about 7 thousand units
An active stage of flood control measures has started in the capital of Tatarstan. The Kazan Land Improvement Committee inspects the readiness of the road network, in particular, storm collectors, for active snowmelt. The chairman of the Committee Albert Shainurov headed the commission to inspect potentially problematic areas together with representatives of district administrations and contractors.
The length of storm collector system reaches 517 kilometers in the city, and the number of rain collectors is about 7,000 units. All of them require orderly cleaning: because of the meltwater, road garbage constantly enters the system, which clogs the frames.
«The weather being warm, the snow begins to melt, and the melt water enters the storm collectors, after which it goes into the storm sewer system. Presently, together with the municipal services and district administrations, we are identifying places where flooding may occur. We are opening storm wells so that meltwater can flow into the system. Since the melting process is accompanied by a constant accumulation of garbage, contractors will work daily at the sites to ensure the free passage of water», – Albert Shainurov explained.
To rapidly respond to problems with the storm collector system, four emergency teams have been formed on the basis of the Municipal Unitary Enterprise “City Improvement. A full range of necessary equipment is provided for the emergency teams: from hand tools and motor pumps to hydrodynamic machines for flushing pipes under high pressure. The operational services of all four enterprises serving the road network work round the clock.
To date, the main task of contractors is to clear snow and ice along roads and storm drain frames to ensure the free passage of meltwater. If these measures are not sufficient, specialized vehicles would be sent to the facility: a suction sewer cleaning truck is used, which cleans the system under water pressure and restores the pipe capacity.
Work on the preparation of storm sewers will continue until the snow melts completely. The municipal services simultaneously clean rain collectors, remove snow from the streets to snow melting points and check the most vulnerable sections of the urban road network.
