Wet wipes and grenades: the Municipal Unitary Enterprise Vodokanal extracts 9 tons of garbage every day from the sewer system

The enterprises kindly asks Kazan residents to use trash cans for disposing of household and food waste

Vodokanal eliminates up to 50 blockages every day, promptly responding to the calls of Kazan residents. On average, around 9 tons of waste are removed from the sewerage system each day. During this year, over 12,800 blockages have been cleared from the networks. The most common items found are wet wipes, personal hygiene goods such as ear sticks, cotton buds, diapers, and contraceptives. These non-biodegradable goods cause serious damage to expensive equipment when they enter the system. The specialists from Vodokanal informed about the extensive work on wastewater treatment at the press tours for journalists.

All wastewater from residential buildings, industrial facilities and social institutions in Kazan flows through underground pipes to 108 wastewater treatment plants. Here, the initial cleaning process takes place, with special grates catching large garbage.

Up to 1.5 tons of waste are collected per day at one of the largest wastewater treatment plants - Novo-Ometyevskaya.

«It is impossible for the wastewater treatment plant to capture 100% of garbage. The plant quickly removes large garbage from the water and send it to sewage treatment plants for further purification. What enters the grates has a critical impact on the equipment», – explained Ilgiz Shakirov, Chief Engineer of biological treatment facilities in Kazan.

After the initial filtration (removal of large garbage) at the plant, wastewater is sent to municipal wastewater treatment plants, where it undergoes mechanical, biological, and chemical treatment processes.
